Mentoring the Next Generation of Plumbers

At Metro Code, we believe that investing in the next generation of tradespeople strengthens not only our industry, but also our communities. That’s why we’re proud to serve as mentors in the Plumb Perfect Dream Bathroom Challenge, a six-week statewide competition where students design and plumb their dream bathroom with guidance from industry professionals.

Organized by PHCC Texas and CIEF, and supported by Milwaukee Tools, the challenge gives students hands-on experience with real-world plumbing concepts; from fixture selection and bathroom design to calculating slopes, running water and vent lines, and installing p-traps. Each week, student teams work through instructional modules and then meet with their mentor for guidance and problem-solving.

As mentors, our role isn’t to hand over the answers. Instead, we act as a resource, encouraging students to think critically, solve problems, and apply what they’re learning to their blueprints. It’s an approach that mirrors the values we hold at Metro Code: fostering professionalism, accuracy, and accountability in every project.

This program also ties directly to what we do every day at Metro Code. Our team works closely with builders, contractors, and municipalities to provide reliable third-party plan reviews and inspections. Just as we help ensure that projects in the field meet code requirements, we’re now helping students understand the “why” behind plumbing standards, showing them how good design and proper installation create safe, functional spaces.

The Dream Bathroom Challenge is more than just a contest. It’s about preparing young people for meaningful careers in the trades, building their confidence, and giving them a glimpse of the opportunities available in construction and plumbing. For us at Metro Code, it’s also a way to give back to an industry that has given us so much, while ensuring that the next generation is ready to step in and succeed.

At the end of the competition, the top team will win prizes and statewide recognition, but every student will leave with valuable skills, mentorship, and a deeper appreciation for the plumbing trade.
